The day after the season one finale of Naked and Afraid premiered on August 3rd, I went to brunch with my in-laws at a deli in Bethesda, the kind of place that serves toppling smoked meat sandwiches and omelets the size of handbags. Naked and Afraid — a show in which one man and one woman are stranded nude in hostile wilderness without food or water for 21 days — was my guilty pleasure of the summer, and I wanted desperately to talk with someone who understood how wonderful and ridiculous and shameful it was to be hooked on such over-the-top reality fare. Murrow award for his work in Afghanistan. So I grimaced, pushing my greasy food around on my plate. But, you know, purely for professional reasons. I teach a college pop culture seminar, and I like to write about pop culture, which gives me a handy excuse to indulge in reality dreck ad infinitum. The more morally questionable a show is, the more likely I am to tune in on the excuse that anything this excessive has to be examined.
NO food. No water. No help. Definitely no clothes. All competitors on this reality TV show have is the desperate need to survive. This Aussie tells why she did it, and bared her bum to millions.
In the interview, Furneaux discussed her time in the Louisiana swamp with partner Billy Berger, as well as her stunt work and future projects. Furneaux: Naked And Afraid was one of the most intense things I have ever done. I constantly risk my life in situations on set but this was such an intense period of time where 24 hours a day for 21 days I had to be alert to any danger. We were in the swamp in reptile mating season so the snakes and alligators were at their most aggressive and active — every step had to be taken carefully. Furneaux: I was on Season One of the show, and so I was worried about how it would be portrayed by the network and how it would be received the audience. I trusted Discovery and their quality of show and so I signed on despite the extreme nature of the show. I have been very impressed how Discovery kept the true nature of the show and made it something that people of all ages enjoy watching and get inspired by. I believe it is their top rated show at the moment. I loved the idea of beginning from scratch with absolutely nothing and so the challenge caught my attention.
