The work was a triumph from the beginning. Its initial production ran for performances, and within a year some other companies were performing the operetta in England and the United States. When The Mikado was composed, Londoners had been enthusiastic about all things Japanese since the opening of Japan to the West in the mids. From his own visit to the exhibit, Gilbert drew inspiration for some of the finishing details of his libretto; he even hired a Japanese woman he met there to instruct the cast in proper Japanese mannerisms, fan use, and makeup. Further realistic touches for the opera were supplied by the famed Hawes Craven , a scene painter noted for his unprecedented realism. As in much of the Gilbert and Sullivan canon, there is sharp commentary in The Mikado upon contemporary English society. For example, Gilbert makes the character Pooh-Bah a government official in charge of everything including complaints about himself , as a prominent man in a small English town might actually be. Similarly, the pivot of the plot—a law that condemns a man to death for the crime of flirting—can be seen as a comment on the outdated laws lingering in England at the time. The music too is cleverly wrought. These are presented separately, then combined into an intricate counterpoint that recalls the mastery of Johann Sebastian Bach.

We are in the process of expanding to incorporate grand opera and modern musicals. We are extremely proud of our excellent reputation and produce major shows and concerts each year. As our name suggests we are based in Bournemouth, Dorset and perform at major venues across Dorset, including Lighthouse in Poole , the Regent Centre in Christchurch and the Barrington Theatre in Ferndown. There is something going on year round and we have regular social events too! Performing membership is open to anyone who passes an audition but we also welcome non-acting members to help behind the scenes with props, scenery construction and general administration. To subscribe to our mailing list and keep up to date click here. Rehearsals are primarily held on Wednesday evenings — with additional rehearsals called during the run up to a show. Following our announcement that our October show will be The Pirates of Penzance, we have added some photographs from our production of The Pirates of Penzance.

Taking as his starting point the expiry of copyright on the opera libretti at the end of and using fascinating hitherto unpublished archive material, Bradley reveals the extraordinary story of the last years of the old D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, the guardian of Savoy tradition for over a hundred years, and the troubled history of its successor. He explores the rich vein of parodies, spoofs, and spin-offs of the songs, as well as their influence on twentieth century lyricists and composers. Read more Read less.
Our group is dedicated to performing the joint works of Sir W. Gilbert , playwright and humorist, and Sir Arthur Sullivan , unofficial composer laureate of England and favorite of Queen Victoria. Together they wrote a series of fourteen comic operettas including H. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance , and The Mikado which were wildly popular in their own time and are still widely performed by amateur and professional groups today, over a hundred years after their creation. These operettas were the forerunners of our modern musicals, and in many ways resemble them more than they do the grand operas.
